This is kind of funny, I'm doing a report on bonsai as well, but it's kind of too late for me to get info from you, but if you're still looking for the history try these two books. (They have conflicting stories) 
"Chinese Peijing" by Hu Yunhua, and "Bonsai Survival Manual" by Colin Lewis. Good Luck!!
